FundingNDIS, Medicare and private, in plain English

Which sounds most like you?

NDIS

We support NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. Speech pathology is usually funded from the Capacity Building budget in your child's plan.

  1. Make an enquiry and let us know your child has an NDIS plan.
  2. We'll ask about the goals in the plan, so therapy lines up with them.
  3. We agree on a service agreement together before sessions start.
  4. We invoice you (self-managed) or your plan manager (plan-managed).

Children under 9 may be able to get support through the NDIS early childhood approach. If you're still waiting on a plan, you're welcome to start privately and switch later.

Travel is charged for visits to home, kinder, childcare and school. We'll always talk this through before we start.

Medicare

Medicare can give you a rebate for some speech pathology sessions. You pay for the session, claim the rebate, and pay the difference (the gap).

  1. See your GP and ask whether a chronic condition management plan is right for your child.
  2. If it is, your GP writes a plan and refers your child to us.
  3. A GP plan can cover up to five allied health sessions a year with a Medicare rebate.

M10 changes

From March 2026, the Medicare M10 changes expanded support for some children and young people under 25, including those who stutter, have a speech sound disorder or need therapy related to cleft lip or palate. Ask your GP, and ask us, whether your child is eligible.

Some children with autism or another eligible condition can also get rebates through a referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Your doctor can tell you more.

Private and health funds

You can pay for sessions yourself. No referral is needed, so you can enquire straight away.

  • Many private health insurance extras policies cover speech pathology. Check your policy for your limits.
  • Session length and frequency can be determined with you, based on your child's needs.
  • We'll send our current fees when you enquire.

Not sure yet?

That's completely fine. Make an enquiry and we'll work through your options with you. Lots of families use a mix, for example Medicare sessions alongside private sessions, or an NDIS plan with allied health assistant support to make funding go further.
